Jose Luis Castrillo

Born in Sevilla in 1959. Of marked self-taught character, he has more than forty years of experience in painting. At the age of twenty he started mainly as a portraitist, and at sixty years of age he presumes to be in his most fruitful and creative stage.

His works are in private collections in places such as the Palace of the Countess of Lebrija, the Palace of the Marquis of La Motilla, the Palace of the Dueñas (Ducal House of Alba), the Royal and Illustrious College of Pharmacists of Seville, brotherhoods such as El Gran Poder, as well as the Banco Urquijo Collection and other banking entities.

He has carried out numerous works for leading figures such as La Duquesa de Alba, Carmen Martínez-Bordiú, Carlos Herrera, Antonio Gala, as well as descendants of the Spanish Royal Family. He has received international personal commissions for countries such as the Philippines, Italy or the United States, in addition to having worked for important Spanish bullfighters and relevant families such as Osborne Ybarra, Urquijo, Lasso de La Vega and Álvarez de Toledo, among others.

In addition to the numerous exhibitions in his hometown, Castrillo has shown his work in various galleries throughout Spain: Madrid, Barcelona, Murcia, Badajoz, Granada, Huelva, Cádiz, Almería and Málaga, jumping onto the international scene at the Art Fair in New York 2002.

Among his numerous national awards, the First Prize for Painting from the Illustrious College of Notaries of Seville (2003) and having been selected at the Florence International Biennial of Contemporary Art (2007) stand out. Its limited editions and posters have reached worldwide diffusion and are endorsed by the prestigious company Winn Devon (Canadian Prints).

Light | Matter | Colour

In his painting simplicity prevails in the line and the search for light amid great contrasts, trying to capture only what the spirit is capable of feeling as essential, since he learned from the masters that truth is found in the simple.

Color and matter also take on substantial importance in his work, corroborating in his landscapes the strength or melancholy of southern nature and its architectural grandeur. to create a dream reality, with impressionistic and experimental shades that make your painting original and innovative.

But it is the portrait that he considers a point and apart from the rest of the subjects. For him it is an added gift where he plays with the spirit of the person, with the look and his emotional intensity.

SPIRITUALITY IN ART

His religious work is perhaps what most characterizes this artist. It is part of love and peace as an intrinsic spiritual need of the human being.

He explains that, -everyone is looking for their own happiness, liberation from the shadows of this world and from that fear that our own ego creates for us-.

For Castrillo, an artist is a channel; a means for creation to materialize and above all to speak for itself, without attributing anything to itself. Letting that creative energy flow is something that he has chosen, because he conceives life as an illusion that we can manipulate at will.
