Pictorial portrait of the Apostle of the lepers
Belgian Catholic Missionary Religious Painting Damian of Molokai, belonging to the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts. Thanks to his compassionate work, he is known as the spiritual pattern of the marginalized and sick with leprosy and other diseases such as AIDS. After spending nine years living in Hawaii, he decides to stay to take care of the Molokai lepers, also fighting with a government that he asked for money and services for the development of schools, houses, orphanages and churches. Over time, Father Damián became infected with leprosy and this is how he is represented in this work. He was beatified in 1995 by the pope Juan Pablo II and canonized in 2009 by the pope Benedicto XVI.
